Open Wounds

This book project with the working title Die offenen Wunden (Open Wounds) will be a collection of essays in which the author reports and reflects on the events she documented as a journalist from the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The collection will include around 40 texts (reportages, portraits, and personal essays), some of which were published in the German daily newspaper taz (https://taz.de) between 2013 and 2024.
These texts will show the key events of ten years of Russia’s war against Ukraine—from the annexation of Crimea (which the author has witnessed firsthand) and the war in Donbas in 2014–2021 to the attempt to encircle Kyiv in March 2022, the evacuation of Bucha and Irpin, the liberation of the Kyiv Oblast, the documentation of war crimes in the liberated territories of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kherson Oblasts, and the ongoing Russian offensives in the Donetsk Oblast. The journalistic texts are interspersed with the author’s essays reflecting on and documenting the changing moral and psychological dynamics of Ukrainian society, as well as her own as a reporter who has been covering the war in her own country for an international audience for more than 10 years.
