Mapping Experiences of Combat Trauma: Temporality, Symbolization, and Paths of Recovery

In my project, I study individual experiences of Ukrainian defenders who have sustained life-threatening injuries. Grounding my project in interdisciplinary research in collaboration with psychologists, I investigate individual paths of recovery and restructuring, emphasizing diverse ways of coping, complex interactions with medical systems, invisible and underrepresented injuries, and other aspects of paths through traumatic transformations.

A participatory element of the project consists in a series of workshops which provide a space for reflection and articulation through assisted expression by means of graphic notation and images, i.e. mapping of experience. This approach offers a way for transformative processing and reintegration of disruptive experience.

My work with veterans informs a broader structural framework that I apply in conceptualizations of war temporalities. Generally, I aim to convey the ways in which individuals overcome, integrate, and grow from war losses, contributing to a deeper understanding of trauma and recovery processes as manifestations of time.

The project will result in a series of workshops, an exhibition, and a book.
