The aim of the project is to collect and publish a catalogue of sculptures created by the nomadic Polovtsi who inhabited the Ukrainian steppes between the 11th and 13th centuries. A catalogue of this kind was published 50 years ago, but it has long been in need of an update. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has made the problem urgent: Much of this heritage has been occupied or destroyed, and some has been taken to Russia. At the same time, there have been frequent cases of new sculptures being discovered by the Ukrainian military on the front line and transferred to museum collections. However, the problem of some of the sculptures being in private hands remains unresolved.
In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, I plan to use the possibilities of journalism, social media, and historical reconstruction in combination with the methods of historical science. Given the complexity of preparing an exhaustive catalogue, a website allowing for regular updates will also be in the works.
