Located approximately 35 kilometers away from Donetsk, the town of Kurakhove became the target of Russian attacks immediately after the start of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Due to the Russian advances in the Donetsk Oblast, by mid-November 2024 Kurakhove found itself on the brink of Russian occupation. The civilian administration has been evacuated to safer areas in Ukraine, and the majority of the remaining residents have left.
Like many towns in the Donetsk Oblast, Kurakhove was a tight-knit community with a dense network of interpersonal contacts. Its residents have both a very strong local and regional identity. After the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, the local authorities attempted to maintain contacts with those residents who had fled to safer areas and continue to do so. This project will follow displaced Kurakhove residents and the town authorities’ attempts to preserve the community.
