The Heritage Preservation Community and Its Transformations During Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion of Ukraine

Civic engagement is a key factor in driving change and fostering effective interaction with authorities. Heritage activists and preservationists are a proactive part of civil society, with many having joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces and continuing to do so. We have been losing heritage preservationists and volunteers who have fallen in the war, and the community responds to these losses through actions and initiatives honoring their memory. Those of us remaining in civilian life support and continue the work of those serving in the armed forces. As a result, new community behavior patterns and unique projects have been emerging. It is important to document and support these positive societal responses. As a co-founder and researcher of the NGO “Renovation Map,” I will investigate and collect new initiatives and changes that have occurred in the sector, detailing their history and current activities.
