Kinography: The Impact of the Full-Scale War on Ukrainian Cinemas of the Soviet Period

Kinography is a digital archive that uses an interactive map of cinemas and research texts to visualize the reduction of the number of cinemas in Ukraine and critically reflect on the transformation of this cultural infrastructure. In the context of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, Ukrainian cinemas have faced radical transformations: some of them suffered from shelling, while others have been reappropriated by local communities, becoming a shelter for refugees and vulnerable communities.

Kinography aims to document disruption of this cultural infrastructure, the challenges its workers face during the war, as well as the grassroots experiences of reclaiming such cinema spaces. The project believes such a digital archive to be the key to a broader discussion on cultural policy and modernist heritage in Ukraine. The project will result in updated data on the Kinography web page, interviews with movie theater workers, and an article reflecting on the impact of the war on their activities.
