“For Our Boys and Girls”: The Stories of Volunteers in Ukraine

The volunteer movement in Ukraine emerged during the Revolution of Dignity and gained widespread popularity after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The urgent need to change the situation motivated people of completely different backgrounds to help as much as possible. The invasion on 24 February 2022 became a transformative moment for the entire nation, transforming it into a cohesive team of volunteers. The phenomenon of volunteering has changed countless lives, but what motivates those who continue to make it a daily routine and a firmly rooted aspect of their lives? How is this movement changing Ukraine and Ukrainian society, and what impact will it have on the future? Each volunteer has a unique story, and this project aims to record the reasons behind their choices, which will serve as a resource for future researchers. The goal is to document volunteers’ experiences in retrospect, one year on since the start of the full-scale war.
