Due to their ethnic origins, Roma people in Ukraine have been a target of discrimination for centuries. The pogroms and murders that have been committed over the past few years are proof of the continuing existence of antigypsyism. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on Ukrainian territory in 2022, the situation of the Roma has become even more vulnerable. The negative attitude towards Roma community members could even be exacerbated by violent wartime experiences, which simultaneously increases the likelihood of discriminatory and potentially violent acts against Roma in a postwar period. In Ukrainian society, there is no awareness of Roma-related issues and their historical and cultural uniqueness. This is a point of departure for my current project Safeguarding the Cultural Heritage of Roma People During The War in Ukraine which sees itself as contribution to the Roma discourse and a step towards breaking the silence surrounding it.
