The Yars

Over 2,000 sites of mass executions of Jews and other Ukrainian population groups, perpetrated by the German Nazis, are located in Ukraine. Due to the postwar Soviet policy of anti-Semitism, a large number of those sites remains unmarked, having been identified only recently thanks to the efforts of international and Ukrainian researchers. These days, all of those sites are part of the war zone again, yet in different ways. Located very close to the current front line, some are at risk of Russian occupation; some have already been occupied; while some are, for now, away from the frontline, they are still affected by the war in various ways brought about by the Russian war of attrition, ranging from air bombings to the lack of resources needed to maintain (or construct) memorials for the victims. I aim to create a filmic catalogue of these sites of memory by documenting each site that I manage to visit, and edit the images into a full-length documentary film.
