Today, Ukrainian families are overcoming numerous challenges. The war caused long-term economic, energy and social crises for many, and the forced flight of women and children has destroyed the stability of family life. But despite the difficulties, in almost every interview we hear sentiments like those shared by Alina (August 2022, Bucha): “The war forced me to reconsider my priorities. To put aside everything that has become unimportant now and to focus on the main thing––my family.” The new realities of life in wartime often lead to conflicts and misunderstandings among spouses, which, in their turn, give rise to new practices of family life, distribution of gender roles and responsibilities.
This project’s principal goal is to gather interviews of Ukrainian women to document the human dimension of this war and analyze the collected materials. We believe these testimonies will be part of a collection that will serve researchers and the wider public.
