Modest Architecture, Great Significance: The Mental Heritage of Kharkiv

The project aims to document and preserve memories of lesser-known yet significant architectural objects in Kharkiv which play a vital role in shaping the city’s local identity. The project combines a scientific approach and artistic interpretation to explore how these “modest” buildings, often overshadowed by larger landmarks, leave a deep imprint on the collective consciousness.

Focusing on the concept of mental heritage, the project views these objects as carriers of collective memory, recollections, and emotions that shape the cultural identity of the community, even when the physical structures disappear or are destroyed. The central objective of the project is to create a Digital Catalogue of Kharkiv’s Mental Heritage which will gather living human memories of this modest heritage. In times of war, when many of these objects are destroyed or under threat, the project will help preserve cultural identity through the safeguarding of mental heritage.
