“Wartime Art Archive. Discourse” is a research project based on the curatorial project “Wartime Art Archive” of the NGO “Museum of Modern Art,” in which curators Olga Balashova, Halyna Hleba and Tetyana Lysun observe and record manifestations of war in the practices of Ukrainian artists from February 24, 2022, and will continue until the end of martial law in Ukraine. These artworks are our latest cultural heritage and artistic evidence of changes in Ukrainian society. The archive will thus become a visual map of the transformation of society and art amidst universal upheaval.
As of September 2022, the curators of the archive have observed around 200 authors who continue to create artistic responses to acute social and political events and reflect on the psychological and political, personal and collective conditions of Ukrainian society. Over 5,000 digitally archived works of art provide a daily chronology of social life during the Ukrainian war. Currently, the archive contains a database of visual information, which can help to analyze the dynamics of cultural and social processes in Ukraine.
“Wartime Art Archive. Discourse” aims at a professional discussion of the current state of society and the cultural front in the circle of invited curators of the project. Curators and researchers will present the results of their work in a series of intellectual explorations, journalistic works, and scientific studies.
