The Past Unsimple is a hybrid documentary project which focuses on the kind of invisible memories that drop out of official historical narratives. Experiences which do not fit the agendas of political elites shape an alternative history, without heroes and without intentions to dominate or oppress. The film traces such elusive and eloquent memory narratives in the setting of the Ukrainian periphery. Cinematographic reflections unfold as Ukrainians try to deal with historical contradictions and face the terrifying circumstances of Russian aggression. The film’s protagonists share their extraordinary yet precise visions of the present to create more complex and inclusive memories as a foundation for the future.
