The book Kharkiv is a Dream brings together three researchers in a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue about urban activism in Kharkiv. It examines how urban space has long been a canvas for debates on history, identity, and the future.
Focusing on three events from the past decade, the book shows how actors have shaped and interpreted Kharkiv’s cityscape. Architect and artist Vasylysa Shchogoleva explores the city in 2023 as a site of healing. Cultural anthropologist Viktoriia Grivina revisits a 2018 street-art conflict that sparked a community debate. Anthropologist Hjørdis Clemmensen reflects on the sense of time as a contested context for architecture students in 2013.
The three authors discuss each other’s work and reflect on the changes they have seen in Kharkiv over the past decade. Through honest and critical conversation, this book aims to document Kharkiv’s urban evolution and embed it in global conversations.
