On 21 February 2024, the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol will be screened in Vienna at the Votivkino. We are marking the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine with the film that documents the first 20 days of the siege of Mariupol. Since then, things have only got worse. The debut film by an award-winning war photographer that illustrates the reality of war was recently nominated for the 2024 Academy Award. Let's hope that it will become a call to action.
20 Days in Mariupol is a documentary by Ukrainian journalist Mstyslav Chernov about the last international reporters on the ground and their struggle to survive in the besieged city. The Pulitzer Prize-winning team continued their work despite many challenges to deliver the horrifying images of the siege to the world audiences: mass graves, children dying, hospitals destroyed by Russian rockets. Combining news items with Chernov’s personal footage, 20 Days in Mariupol creates a compelling image of one of the greatest tragedies of the Russo-Ukrainian war.
This screening of 20 Days in Mariupol, co-organized by the U.S. Embassy in Austria and the NGO YOUkraine, will be followed by a discussion in English with Katherine Younger, IWM Permanent Fellow and Co-Head of the Documenting Ukraine Program, Andreas Sauermoser, Reseacher in Human Rights and International Criminal Law at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, and Max, Volunteer at the NGO YOUkraine.
