Political philosophy of early European modernity is part of our heritage and standard education in the humanities and social sciences. New books on Machiavelli and Hobbes, Spinoza and Locke are published every year, and contemporary political philosophers sometimes refer to them as if they were still alive. For what reason? Why do we still refer to concepts of sovereignty, reason of the state, multitude, police state and social contract?
