My research explores the development of social indicators for measuring quality of life in late-socialist Romania, reconstructing the interplay between social policy, ideology, and scientific practice at a time when living standards dropped dramatically. It argues that the concern to control the social implications of modernization stemmed from broader revisions to dogmatic Marxism Leninism, as well as from mimesis of Western scientific discourse.
