Empathy for the other human being involves work of imagination and phantasy. Free floating phantasy and solidified imagination are loaded with feelings of entirely different nature. While amorphous fantasies contribute to constitution of a radically different other, ready-made mental images lead to identification with the other, which is liable to turn into rejection. The project will explore the role of phantasy in perception of work of art, as well as morbid forms of imagination bordering on delusion in psychopathology and propaganda.
