The Kosovo Specialist Chambers are a distinctive entity in international criminal justice, tasked with prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army during and after the Kosovo War. Unlike other mechanisms, the KSC was established internally by the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo at the request of the European Union and operates with a selective jurisdictional focus and a high level of internationalization. This research project aims to evaluate the KSC as a new model of an internationalized judicial mechanism and attempts to answer questions about its legal nature, and its internal and international dimensions, comparing it with other hybrid and internationalized tribunals. Additionally, it explores the potential for the KSC to contribute to transitional justice in Kosovo and the possible political and societal impact on Kosovar society. Key research questions include inquiries into the KSC’s impact on historical narratives surrounding the conflict, its political and societal implications in Kosovo, and the legal and discursive analysis of its indictments and proceedings.
