Ukraine and the World

Research Programs

Ukraine and the World is a research program dedicated to fostering intellectual enquiry about Ukraine in a global context. It encourages research that aims to reconsider Ukrainian history, society, and culture through a global lens—and vice versa—and explores trans-geographic and cross-chronological linkages in thinking about life during and after the Russo-Ukrainian War.

With this program, the IWM continues its decade-long engagement with Ukraine. Ukraine and the World is the successor to the Ukraine in European Dialogue program, while Documenting Ukraine, which was launched in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, becomes an integral component of the new program.

Key components of the program include:

  • Lesia Ukraïnka residential fellowships, offered to scholars addressing global issues through reference to Ukrainian experiences.
  • Documenting Ukraine grants, awarded to Ukrainian scholars, writers, journalists, archivists, and other intellectuals chronicling the Russo-Ukrainian War and its implications for Ukrainian culture and society.
  • The Documenting Ukraine archival project, aimed at developing an innovative digital preservation model for the materials created within the scope of the Documenting Ukraine project.
