Historians transform the past into a mostly national history. How can these various historiographies be compared and related? Christoph Conrad attempts to define some perspectives for such a transnational study: the functions of historians in the service of the state and civil society constitute one such axis, the spread of schools or “paradigms” is another. Finally, the tensions between methodological nationalism and Europeanization will be considered empirically.
