Based on several case studies, my research project is aimed at studying the premises, substance and consequences of Russia’s “long 2012” – the year which turned out to be the turning point in Russia’s recent history, including the Pussy riot case, media scandals related to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), the rise and fall of the Russian protest movement and ROC’s involvement, Putin’s reelection and his “conservative turn”. The main emphasis will be put on the Russian Orthodox Church and its relations with state and society. The crises in Ukraine and the alienation between Russia and the West will be regarded as a continuation and further unfolding of the dynamics of “the long 2012”.

The project The Perils of Moralism: Russian Orthodoxy and Russian Politics is related to IWM’s research focus “Russia in Global Dialogue” and Kristina Stoeckl’s research project Religious Traditionalism and Politics.
