FellowshipsThis project aims to produce a Croatian translation of A Writer at War by Vasily Grossman, a seminal collection of his frontline dispatches from World War II. As a Soviet-Jewish war correspondent embedded with the Red Army, Grossman reported from key battles such as Stalingrad, Kursk, and Berlin, bearing witness to the devastation of Eastern Europe, the Holocaust, and the suffering of civilians under totalitarian regimes. His vivid, humane, and unflinching prose captures the complexity of the war and the resilience of those who endured it. This translation will introduce Croatian readers to one of the most important chroniclers of the 20th century, offering a unique lens through which to reflect on war, memory, and historical responsibility. In light of ongoing conflicts, both in Europe and beyond, Grossman’s insights into violence, ideology, and human dignity remain urgently relevant, encouraging critical engagement with both past and present.
