Famine does not emerge in a vacuum but occurs in specific political, social, and natural environments, where all elements are intertwined. Focusing on the non-anthropological dimensions of the Soviet famines in Ukraine, this project will demonstrate the significance of materialist, consumerist and environmental optics for a fuller understanding of the consequences of revolutionary events following the First World War, Soviet collectivization, and post-Second World War destruction. During the fellowship, Iryna will focus on examining materialities and the role of waste in the survival of the hungry.
