The aim of my project is to write an environmentally inspired colonial history of the Balkans. The study analyzes forestry management in Bosnia and Herzegovina when it was a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire(1878-1918). Particular attention is given to conflicts and negotiation processes over natural resource exploitation and the diverging views of forestry among the Austro-Hungarian officials, the private enterprises and the local Bosnian population. The project is located at the intersection of colonial, legal, economic, and environmental history.
