Johann P. Arnason

The project is a book-length essay, designed to clarify the notion of multiple modernities by connecting it to the interpretation of modernity as a new civilization. This idea was first outlined by Jan Patočka and later developed in historicosociological terms by S.N. Eisenstadt. However, it is still much less discussed than it deserves to be. The analysis will pay particular attention to the Communist episode as well as to East Asian experiences.
