We are increasingly reliably informed about how we have been imperilling our future prospects as a terrestrial species; but have made scanty headway in understanding quite why such an intelligent species should have done anything quite so stupid. The explanation is politics – our severely limited capacity to live well with each other on at all a large scale. Thought through carefully the history of political thinking in Europe and its diaspora, for all its limitations and biases in other respects, provides a clear and compelling answer.
