This project investigates the development of irrigation systems in Soviet Ukraine between World War II and Russia’s current war on Ukraine. These systems, created by Soviet authoritarianism, inherited by democratic Ukraine, and now contested during Russia’s neo-imperialist war on Ukraine, present an illuminating case for historical "political ecology." Post-World War II water management projects open questions about the relationships between territorial integrity, economic sovereignty and the transformed natural environment.
