Although a great deal of scholarly work has been written on the subject of “Vergangenheitsbewältigung”, there is no comprehensive comparative study of the three successor states of the “Greater German Reich”. This research project attempts to fill this gap. It concentrates above all on the official images (“Geschichtsbilder”) of the Nazi past and their transformation in the 1980s. Thereby it focuses on transnational aspects and reveals for the first time how coming to terms with the past in the two German States and Austria were related to each other.
