Łukasz Chełmiński

While at IWM, Lukasz Chełmiński will continue his research on the Polish émigré publication Aneks. This publication was an “annex” both to Polish politics in the 1970s to 1980s and to Kultura (the latter published by Jerzy Giedroyc). Though unlike Giedroyc and Kultura, it was the ethos of Aneks and the émigrés who founded it that politics would happen at home in Eastern Europe rather than be imported from the emigration. This perspective better aligned with the last two decades of communism in Eastern Europe. At the same time, Aneks was an evolution of the idea, which Giedroyc championed for decades, that the peoples of this part of Europe must solve their own problems. This notion is increasingly important to consider today, as the western world considers its support for Ukraine.
