Maria Stepanova

The project started as an exploration of how our memory works: tracking slight and meaningful deformations that transform the reality of the past into a work of art, a myth – or into a deserted zone of omissions and denials. As years passed, it developed into a Russian family chronicle of five generations, from the mid-19th century to the present day, a meditation on the role of photography in reshaping history, and an attempt to research the no man’s land between document and fiction.
