Mariia Kardash
Fellowships
FellowshipsThis research explores how Soviet national minorities were represented in theatrical and dance performances and how theater critique in popular media from both sides of the Iron Curtain contributed to the construction of a Soviet Subaltern in need of a protective and experienced 'older brother' (Russians as titular nation). A specific focus of this study lies in the Western audience's reaction to the Soviet national ensembles touring abroad and the way foreign spectators unpacked the ideas of the USSR's internal ethnic hierarchy codified in the Soviet stage productions. Maria Kardash is also interested in how the images of Ukrainians cultivated by Soviet performing arts still affect modern perceptions of Ukrainian culture worldwide.
This fellowship is generously funded by the City of Vienna.
