In the field of Ukrainian history, one of the most exciting contemporary scholars was Mark von Hagen, whose work has challenged the nation-state’s conceptual hegemony and explored some of the most contested issues of identity formation and colonial institutions and structures. This selection brings together his early research on Soviet military, social & political history, later studies on the emergence of modern Ukraine and the Ukrainian nation in total war and revolution, and accounts on how to approach the entangled histories of Ukraine and Russia.
