Enlightened Sarmatians is a conceptual history of attempts at "creative adaptation" of radical Enlightenment to Polish republican tradition. By analyzing the transfer of general equality and other radical concepts across the border between Eastern and Western Europe - a symbolic demarcation line associated in the Enlightenment with the division between barbarism and civilization - this project challenges the persistent image of Eastern European passivity and aims at contributing to a better understanding of the multi-faceted character of global modernity.
