I am completing the manuscript for the book Well-tempered Discontent, which tests competing political scientific theories of political behavior in ethnically divided societies by examining parliamentand parliamentary elections in the Western half of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy between 1867 and 1918. The main finding of this project is that nationality played a much less fundamental role in Austrian political life than is often assumed, forcing us to reconsider a case that is central to current understandings of nations, nationalism and East Central European political development. I am also pursuing a number of related projects.
