The objectives of the study include the analysis of the process of the geographical isolation of foreigners, their institutionalization and instrumentalization, as well as changes in the practical implementation of this kind of control on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR in the period 1920–1980. Tight control over foreigners led not only to the prohibition of free movement, but also to the formation of a special view of the Soviet state. Basically, all foreigners saw and imagined the USSR as an urban country. This artificial approach often still determines the geography of historical research in the West.
