Science used to be guarded from political interference by the claim of academic autonomy. Yet in the past decade, attempts to measure scientific practices and outcomes have become common, and they have increasingly influenced the conduct of scientific research. This book project aims at providing an overview of recent trends in assessing, and surveying, science. It also shows how measuring science is at the center of the attempts to increase, and optimize, efforts to stimulate innovation and to solve societal challenges, and the intended as well as unintended consequences of this relatively new kind of policing.
