Throughout the entire European philosophical and scientific tradition, the human being, in contrast to all other living beings, was defined as an intelligent being, that is, as “homo sapiens”. Accordingly, it was believed that intelligence is the highest ability of human subjectivity and that it is through this ability that man differs from the animal. Max Scheler criticizes this view, showing that higher animals are also capable of intellectual action, and man differs from the animal by the short word Scheler uses: “spirit” (Geist). One of the most important characteristics of the spirit is freedom. The animal is chained to its environment due to its innate instincts. But human existence is not the product of innate instincts. This lack is compensated by our freedom. We are weak, but we are free. We are not chained to any environment. The horizon of our life is the universe. The philosophical justification of absolute human freedom is becoming important in today’s world, because today we often have to choose between freedom and security. But we should not forget that freedom is not only a fundamental right of each individual, but also a fundamental property of the human being as a whole.

В усій європейській філософській і науковій традиції людина на противагу всім іншим живим істотам визначалася як розумна істота, тобто як «homo sapiens». Відповідно до цього вважалося, що інтелект є найвищої здатністю людської суб’єктивності і що людина саме через цю здатність відрізняється від тварини. Макс Шелер критикує цей погляд, показуючи, що вищі тварини також здатні до інтелектуальних дій, а людина відрізняється від тварини тим, що він називає коротким словом «дух» («Geist»). Одною з найважливіших властивостей духа є свобода. Тварина прикута до її довкілля через вроджені інстинкти. Але людське існування не забезпечується вродженими інстинктами. Ця нестача компенсується нашою свободою. Ми слабкі, але ми вільні. Ми не прикуті до жодного довкілля. Горизонтом нашого життя є всесвіт. Філософське обґрунтування абсолютної свободи людини набуває в сучасному світі важливого значення, оскільки сьогодні ми дуже часто мусимо обирати між свободою та безпекою. Але при цьому не варто забувати, що свобода є не лише фундаментальним правом кожної окремої людини, а також ґрунтовною властивістю людської істоти загалом.
