Debating Europe on 12 January: Europe’s Future after Trump

Event announcement

We start the new year with another edition of Debating Europe at the Burgtheater Vienna. On 12 January 2025, there will be a highly topical discussion on the impact of Trump's election victory on Europe and its political landscape.

Not only did Trump win, he won by much more than anyone expected, including his own supporters. There is widespread concern among European liberals and progressives that Trump 2.0 will be Trump unleashed. Among Europe’s right, who now dominate governments in several parts of the continent, his election is seen as a vindication and a boost to their ambitions. Trump’s cabinet appointments suggest that this will be a government of loyalists with little experience of government, and many are interpreting this to mean we will see even more radical policies than during Trump 1.0. The issues of Ukraine and the US commitment to NATO will be of immediate concern but the threatened tariffs of 10%-20% on European goods could have a dramatic long-term effect on Europe’s economic prospects.

This edition of Debating Europe brings together a high-profile international panel from the right, left, and centre. Nathalie Tocci (Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali, Rome and Europe's Futures Fellow at the IWM Vienna), Hannelore Veit (Journalist and communications consultant, former correspondent for the Austrian public broadcaster ORF), and Balázs Orbán (Political Director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán) will debate how a Trump administration will impact Europe. The discussion will be led by IWM Rector Misha Glenny.

Tickets for the event can be purchased on the Burgtheater website.
