This project focuses on the case of Russia’s new middle classes and the recently-introduced state policies of embargo and import substitution. I explore how the representatives of the new middle classes react to and enact these regulations amidst general economic crisis. My analysis traces how this process is mediated by and simultaneously reconfigures their relationships with the state, which are shaped by their experiences of Russia’s post-Soviet development.
