This project will consider the memoir of an ordinary Jewish man born in the Russian Pale of Settlement, who served in the Great War, survived the Civil War, and arrived in Brooklyn in 1930. It provides examples of violence and displacement, on the one side; mobility, cultural adaptation, and diasporic resilience, on the other—a story both typical and personal that illustrates key themes in early 20th century East European history.
