My project seeks to draw parallels between the educational policies pursued by the governments of the multiethnic and multicultural Habsburg and Russian Empires in order to foster national consciousness. Teaching history in schools for bringing up loyal citizens was the key means by which those two states sought to transmit the idea of adherence to the ruling dynasties, rather than the idea of a particular nation, as the glue that bound together their multinational territories.
