Housing can be regarded as both a fundamental right and a commodity. This tension is inherent in the variety of institutional frameworks of housing provision in different times and places, depending on market forces, state power and relations of kinship. This research project will examine different property rights arrangements along an axis of de-/commodification, from individualized tradable home-ownership to commons-based forms of housing, focusing on the temporal dimension of institutions such as leases and mortgages.
