This project focuses on one particular strategy intended to appease national conflict within a given state: National-personal autonomy grants self-rule to the ethnic nation as a corporate body and applies to all members of an ethnic group irrespective of their place of residence within a given state. This project investigates the interplay between theoretical and practical approaches (both) in various provinces and at the political centre of the Habsburg Empire, as well as the continuities and transfers of this idea into interwar Central and Eastern Europe.
