Belarus has changed my life since I travelled there for the first time in 1994. To the majority of Europeans Belarus remains a “terra incognita“. Some know it as „Europe´s last dictatorship“, which is partly due to its infamous autocratic president, Alyaksandr Lukashenka. My book is guided by two questions: What is the essence of Belarusian history? And why do we need to know more about this essence to better understand ourselves as Europeans?
