In the last decade, a number of publications appeared criticizing Western democracy from a postcolonial perspective as an imperial(ist) project. This criticism is not new, but was already voiced within, for example, the North American tradition of radical democratic theory (by Wolin and Tully, among others). The criticism is convincing, but at the same time depends on ideas of equality of freedom that are also founding ideas of the democratic discourse. My project aims to come to grips with this tension/contradiction from a political theory standpoint.
