"Out of the Shadows" tells the story of Central and Eastern Europe from the Enlightenment to the present. The book's storyline is structured around transnational entanglements that have brought Central and Eastern Europe "out of the shadows." Nations do still play a defining role in the book's framework, and particular attention is paid to nations too-long marginal within the historical scholarship of Central and Eastern Europe, notably Ukraine. In the book, national identities are treated as a bridging, rather than a dividing, factor; even chapters focusing principally on one or two nations do so through a transnational lens, exploring political, cultural, religious, social, and intellectual trends that have transcended and reshaped national boundaries.
