The purpose of this study is to show, as its title suggests, that something happened to the notion of sovereignty in Europe after the creation and development of what
is now the European Community and European Union. There is some important development under way that does not allow us to look at sovereignty of EU member states the same way we would do if there were no integration. This includes mainly the abolition of internal frontiers, the creation of a supranational legal system and the introduction of the concept of a European citizenship.
