Why have histories of sacrifice been so haunted (though ‘haunted’ is too thin a word for such visceral figures of birth and the maternal body) by the uncanny mimesis—and repulsion—between mortality and natality? And how does the strange kinship between sacrifice and birth affect the old theological/philosophical debate over the ends and edges of ‘man’, in his fragile position between animalplus and divinityminus (and distinct from ‘woman’—always elsewhere, somewhere)? Figures of Institutional Building (Frankfurt am Main, Vittorio Klostermann, 2022), Peter Bojanić sets out to show how an institution is created or how an institution is institutionalized from a group conducting engaged acts. At the same time, these engaged acts are characterized by a projective mind; they hold critical potential and protocols of resistance that necessarily produce something new. A counter-institution (Europe, for example), for its part, is an institution that alters and deconstructs all other existing institutions. In the lecture, Bojanić focused especially on the conversion of violence (military action and massacres fall under “extreme” violence), into right, justice, and institutions. He is interested in whether the “institution of victory” and its various figures can truly transform violence into long-term stable peace. Read more

The presentation revolved around two themes: (a) the specific context of multiple crises – recent epidemiological, financial, and political crises culminating in a crisis of life; and (b) the emergence of “biopolitics from below” as a response to this conjuncture. It demonstrated how “biopolitics from below” manifests as a phenomenon specifically during moments of crisis and conjuncture. Read more
