Wie umweltfreundlich ist Demokratie, und wie demokratiefreundlich ist der Klimawandel? Beide Fragen scheinen sich auf den ersten Blick von selbst zu beantworten – natürlich lösen liberal-demokratische Systeme Umweltprobleme besser und sind krisenresistenter als Diktaturen, selbstverständlich werden sich westliche Demokratien bei der Abwendung der Klimakatastrophe und der Anpassung an schleichende und dramatische Klimafolgen besser bewähren. Erlebt man nicht gerade, wie brutal autoritäre Systeme in China und anderen Schwellenländern ökonomische Modernisierungsprogramme auf Kosten von Umwelt- und Lebensqualität durchdrücken, während im Westen Unternehmen und Regierungen unter massiven Legitimationsdruck geraten, wenn sie umweltpolitisch unbelehrbar und klimapolitisch unsensibel sind? Und ist nicht der Süden der Weltgesellschaft, in der Regel weniger demokratisch entwickelt, bereits jetzt stärker von Klimafolgen betroffen als der Norden?

Whether Poland is considered to be “in” or “out” of the West is a matter of perception, and perceptions are changing. Poland of today is an interesting case for the analysis of westernization.

Contemporary Russian nationalism, one of the most influential ideological and political forces in the country, consists of several trends and varieties. Still, most of them share some remarkably similar characteristics connected with the Manichaean-type of worldview. The only thing that prevents me from stating that Russian nationalism is nowadays turning away from the West is that its mainstream was always anti-Western. There is nothing new in this respect.

Eine der traditionellen Neurosen der rumänischen Aussenpolitik könnte als „Syndrom der Nicht-Dazugehörigkeit” definiert werden. Recht schnell, nachdem ich in die Geheimnisse und Kulissen unseres Aussenministeriums vorgedrungen war, merkte ich, dass unsere Diplomaten in zwei Kategorien eingeteilt werden können: In jene, die zugeben, dass Rumänien zu Südost-Europa gehört, und in jene, die glauben, dass Rumänien ein Teil Mitteleuropas ist. Die „Balkanisierenden” geben sich mit dem autochthonen Pittoresken zufrieden, finden Gefallen daran, wollen ihren Spitznamen zum guten Namen machen und deuten an, dass unsere historische Aufgabe die eines „regionalen Leaders” ist.

The “language issue” was crucial in the history of Russian-Ukrainian relations and in the long-term process of forming the preconditions for Ukrainian nation-building. Since the mid 18th century Ukraine’s quest for national self-identification under the rule of the Russian Empire, the Habsburgs, interwar Poland and, more recently the Soviet power, was represented mainly in terms of saving, preserving and developing the Ukrainian language. Although it experienced the cultural and linguistic influences of other languages (mainly Polish and German) historical, social, geopolitical and linguistic factors made its relations with Russian the most problematic.

Jednym z wielu zjawisk składających się na proces przejścia od systemów autorytarnych (dyktatorskich, totalitarnych) do demokracji i przebieg jej stabilizacji jest stosunek do ancien regime. Jest to jedno ze zjawisk ekscytujących „zwykłych obywateli” i prowokujące gorące debaty i kontrowersje wśród elit politycznych i intelektualnych.

Nous vivons l’avènement mondial de la mémoire. Depuis vingt ou vingt-cinq ans, tous les pays, tous les groupes, sociaux, ethniques, familiaux, ont été amenés à connaître un profond changement du rapport traditionnel qu’ils entretenaient avec le passé.

Mon propos, après bien d’autres, c’est la vérité en histoire. Il faut peut-être insister sur cette dimension critique à une époque où l’on aborde trop vite les questions de devoir de mémoire. C’est à elles que je viendrai pour finir; ce n’est pas d’elles que je partirai.

This paper aims to explore ambivalence in Ukraine as a socio-political phenomenon. Although ambivalence characterizes virtually every post-communist country, it is determinant in Ukraine’s current (under)development. Broadly confirmed by both empirical evidence and sociological data, ambivalence is a result of Ukraine’s regional, cultural and linguistic discrepancies as well as of the atomizing impact of soviet totalitarianism on Ukrainian society. The author argues that this pervasive legacy not only has not been overcome during the first decade of Ukrainian independence, but on the contrary, has deliberately been maintained by the post-soviet elite currently in power as a necessary if not unique condition of its political survival. The March 2002 legislatives in Ukraine are discussed as a graphic example of manipulation, even if the results were not entirely favorable for the regime. The author contends that the nascent civil society in Ukraine, however weak and thwarted it may be, is still quite resilient, giving Ukraine some chance to transform its post-soviet ambivalence into democratic plurality and, hopefully, subsequent unity.

The discussion of the Italian avantgarde inevitably centers on Marinetti, the Futurists and, perhaps to a lesser degree, on Gabriele d’Annunzio who may have been a “futurist” in his life rather than in his art. Marinetti and his friends were suspicious of d’Annunzio’s mythologizing gestures and his old fashioned poetry, but, as pilot and public figure, d’Annunzio was much closer to an impersonation of their ideas than they cared to admit. A comparative view of d’Annunzio’s Dithyramb IV (on Icarus) and Marinetti’s poetic report on Lt. Piazza’s attack on Arab trenches (1912, the first war use of airplanes recorded) would show the difference between literary articulations, and yet d’Annunzio’s jottings while flying over Austrian positions in WW I come close to Marinetti’s “parole in liberta”, not to speak of d’ Annunzio’s “futurist” war raid against Vienna (1918).

Richard Hyman considers the future of Solidarity. are sceptics correct to think that it has already been irrevocably destroyed by an epoch of individualism? Or can a redefined and reinvented concept of solidarity rescue it for future generations?

Ausgrenzungen gehören nicht zum stereotypen Bild eines finsteren und repressiven Mittelalters. Wir können sehen, wie repressive Verhaltensweisen strukturiert waren, in welchen Momenten sie in Erscheinung traten und wann sie wieder verschwanden. Sie wurzeln zwar in den Gegebenheiten und den geistigen Strukturen der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaften, lassen sich jedoch nicht auf das Spezifische dieser Epoche reduzieren. In jeder Gesellschaft ist – auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen – zu beobachten, wie man gewissermaßen nach Feinden sucht. Diese Bestrebung formt die kollektive Imagination und fördert die Entwicklung eines kollektiven Bewusstseins. Ich möchte hier weder die ganze Bandbreite von Geächteten beschreiben noch die zeitliche Entwicklung ihrer Verfolgung studieren, sondern Ihnen nur zwei Fälle zur Untersuchung vorlegen, gleichsam zwei Sequenzen aus einem langen Film.
